The Kindness of Others - Sarah Matalon

My gorgeous friend Sarah Matalon wrote this letter on her Facebook page and I thought she, and her letter, should be my first Kindness of Others post.

"17 years ago today, April 21st, 1997, I was in an Intensive Care Unit coming round from a liver transplant in London, England. I never wrote a letter of thanks to my donor family because the words 'thank you' seemed so inadequate in return for their generosity. 17 years later I still feel the same but want to say thank you to a family I will never have the honour of knowing for a gesture that is beyond my comprehension in a time of terrible grief. I know my donor was a young man of 18 years. Thanks to that family I have had, so far, seventeen years of extra life and Lara's life was made possible as she was born post transplant. So to my donor family, you have my lifelong gratitude, I hope life has been kind to you since then and that you have laughed a lot and cried as little as possible and I try daily to reward your generous hearts. My thanks to anyone reading this who is a registered organ donor and my sympathy to anyone who reads this who has actually been part of a donor family who has lost a loved one."
