There is a little Dipytque shop in Leadenhall where I always go, both to buy presents and the one perfume I always wear and sometimes just to have a top up spray on my way to the Gherkin, a habit the lovely staff Serena and Grace indulge with lots smiles and goodwill. So much so that I decided to write to the Diptyque HQ in Paris and tell them what excellent job staff they have. Paris replied and thanked me, and then Serena and Grace also replied, inviting me to a Bespoke Shopping Evening in the store to thank me (along with six friends). My birthday was coming up and so I accepted and invited the three friends I always see on my birthday - I thought we could just pop in to be polite then go to dinner (had I known how wonderful it was going to be I would have invited more people, sorry everyone!)
The evening started with champagne, chat and beautiful little cakes and then we started learning about the Diptyque story and the art of perfume making, all punctuated by a huge array of fragrances - they take their famous candles out of their glasses and you smell the glass in which the perfume lingers. It was utterly fascinating (much more so than I would have imagined) and we all found ourselves enthralled and enjoying it immensely. At the end we were all given a candle of our choice as a gift, I was given a bigger candle as a birthday present, we each received a goody bag (thoughtfully packed with samples of things we had liked during the evening) and there was even a prize draw, so Carolyn went home with a beautiful boxed gift set. There was a discount, 10% I think, on anything we bought in the evening too. We had planned to stay for 1/2 hour at most and left after two hours plus having had the most enjoyable evening - I thoroughly recommend it.
