The Thames Barrier saves London again (and again and again) - March 2nd 2014

Johnny (my husband) and Ben (my son) cycled to the Thames Barrier today (crossing the river via the Emirates Cable Car) and they saw it closing while they were there. I first went several times when it opened in the eighties and never got to see it close - probably because that only happened four times in the whole decade! On their visit today they discovered that 25% of all the closures in the last 32 years have been in this last winter and that there were 28 closures in February 2014 alone, preventing the floods that have devastated much of the country. Architecture both beautiful and essential, I send acknowledgment and thanks to the late Sir Roger Walters.
